In which I shall rant...

Went and saw Percy Jackson tonight.

Made the mistake of reading the book first. Found myself enjoying the book and plan on reading the other four.

This is the SECOND foray of Chris Columbus's that I haven't enjoyed. He directed my least favorite Harry Potter movies. Why did I not like them? They didn't follow the freakin' book! Why do I not like the Percy Jackson movie very much? IT DIDN'T FOLLOW THE FREAKIN' BOOK!

Rick Riordan wrote a pretty good book, populated with all kinds of Greek Mythological characters both well-known and not so well-known. It gets made into a movie that has nothing to do with the book itself save for the main character. And Medusa. I'll give them that. But there is so much more in the book that could have been so cool in the movie. It's a case of "I don't want to take this so I need to make the story move along by adding this which means that I can't use that from the book so I have to... well, let's just start all over, shall we?" all over again.

Other books have had similar fates. Blood and Chocolate and Ella Enchanted to name two. Both good books. Pretty decent movies if you don't know what either of them should have been.

Why? Whywhywhywhywhywhywhydka;lkdna;ga;sinalkv'asa'fmlkfmn;s

I only hope that if/when I have a book on the shelves at my local library, some movie company doesn't come along and buy it for the title only. How depressing it must be for these authors to see their "children" ripped apart and sewn back together like that!

To celebrate my irritated mood, I think I'll go write fanfic. Yeah... I'll tear apart someone's "child" and put it back together like I want it to be. *grins*

Yes, it's five books long so far. Not sure if he'll keep going as I've just started reading them and haven't delved too deeply into what's going on in the later books.

And the movie was good. Probably would have enjoyed it better if I hadn't been so irritated that I wasn't seeing what I expected to see. It's always fun to see characters that have only been in my mind up until this moment. I'm all for something that might push more kids to READ and movies about books usually do that. Just wish they could have put it together with more care and compassion for the written word.

I felt the same way about the Percy Jackson movie. My kids enjoyed it but then came home and re-read parts of the book that they liked that never made it into the book and started ranting about why they weren't there. LOL

Love it!

I took my cousins to the movie, the oldest cousin being the one who convinced me to read the book and go see the movie. We spent the drive home talking about what scenes we would have LIKED to have seen (the lines of people in the Underworld and the non-drugging game palace being the biggest) and who we missed the most (Ares!). I think I could, in time, grow to appreciate the movie. There were some interesting parts to it.

Some of those scenes will make might fine fodder for fanfic, though.

And may I say your cracks about the snowboarders on Twitter have given me endless delight and... ideas. None that I'm sure I'll write as I draw the line at RP but ideas nonetheless. *grins*

I HATED the Blood and Chocolate movie. HATED it. The book ended the way it did for reasons. The way they wrote it to end in the movie totally flipped ALL of the struggles Vivian was going through into meaninglessness.

MEH.

I haven't read the Percy Jackson books yet. Wanted to see the movie.. haven't heard great reviews. Will probably wait until DVD.

I think waiting for DVD would be a wonderful option!
