12 days to go until NaNo. Feel free to read and tell me which you think are interesting and would be fun to read more about.
Scene: at Dadelus and Sons curio shop
CHARACTERS: "him", unnamed shopkeeper
PROMPT: all that sparkles
RATING: PG
WORD COUNT: 333
WARNINGS: Just a tiny bit of scene.
DISCLAIMER: Mine. Step away.
He’d had no reason to doubt the word of the street rat. A lie didn’t pay as well as the truth these days. Harold fingered the relatively lightweight of his money bag. This information had definitely cost him more than he’d intended to spend. If it proved false, he would enjoy finding the exact spot that would make the boy scream the loudest.
As he opened the door of the curio shop, his eye was drawn to a glittering display of necklaces. They were probably nothing more than gilded paste but they sparkled as if they believed they were real. He would have to make sure to take several of those when his business here was completed.
The young girl behind the counter looked up as bell’s tinkling filled the tiny shop. “Can I help you, sir?”
“I’m looking for Mr. Dadelus.”
“There is no Mr. Dadelus.” Even though the girl was smiling, he could see the smug superiority in her eyes. “The shop is called Dadelus and Sons but there is no Mr. Dadelus. There are also no sons.”
This put a tiny kink in the plan. He’d never thought to ask the street rat who he might need to talk to. Next time… and there would now have to be a next time… he would get more information. But, he supposed, he didn’t have to go away empty handed.
“Would you show me the necklaces in that display?”
The girl’s eyes lit up. She fingered a set of keys at her waist, finding the right one by feel. “That’s my favorite display. Any woman would love to have one of those beauties to clasp around her neck. Shows she has a man of taste in her life.”
He only nodded and smiled, following behind her enough that he could admire the sway of her hips. Maybe this would be the way he got his information this time. It would be cheaper… and much more enjoyable than finding a new street rat.
