The last thing I need to do is make yet ANOTHER community but I have an idea for one but I need your input. Feel free to answer these questions as a single question and a single answer or just in paragraph form. Please do answer, though. Feel free to invite other people to answer the questions as well.

Question 1:
Have you ever signed up for a "Share a Creation" type of challenge? Like a Big Bang where a person writes a story and another person creates a work of art for that specific story.

Question 2:
In general (and I'm not looking for specifics here), have you ever been disappointed by the experience of such a challenge? Maybe your creation wasn't picked or you created something but didn't get it done in time to share during the open sharing time. Maybe you didn't like the way that the revealing worked.

Question 3:
Have you ever been asked if someone could create something new from something you created? For instance, someone made a podfic from one of your stories or asked to write a story based on a piece of art you created?

Question 4:
Have you ever been scared to ask someone if you could create something from something they created originally?

Question 5:
Is there a reason that you don't do the "Share a Creation" challenge? Do you not like creating on a deadline or haven't signed up in time? Do you create for pairings or fandoms that are small and don't have any challenges for them?

Question 6:
Do you have any other things to add along the lines of the above questions?

****

Incidently, I'm not saying the current system is broke. I'm just wondering if there's another way to go about getting a similar result.

In answer to number 5 or really any of the questions, for me it's raging insecurities. What if people don't like it? So much negative and nervous thoughts keep me from signing up.

I know a lot of people feel that way.

Is there any thing that would make you feel comfortable enough to share? Is it just a time issue (you have to get comfortable with the idea) or do you feel (at the moment) that you will always be reluctant to share in any capacity?

I'd like to be able to warn that my grammar/punctuation is horrid and I only got the editing stuff on Photobucket. I have a strong passion for fandom and I'd like to participate. I definitely have the time to participate. Is it for a certain fandom or is it multi-fandom?

I'm in a risk taking mood right now so if there was ever I time I try it, it's now.

I don't know what it is exactly. It's an idea that I only got in my head today and have only sort of talked it out with one person.

Since the Avengers Reverse Big Bang was weighing heavy on my thoughts, I was thinking that it would be cool if there was a place to go where a person could post something they made and sort of said, "Here. I made this. Have at it." And someone else could create something for it if they wanted.

Of course, it still leaves a person open to disappointment, either because no one snagged the opportunity to create something for their stuff or because it never got completed or what have you. And it would leave the person's art kind of open to trolls.

I think I'm talking myself out of this idea.

Of course, I am talking myself into responding to other people's stuff more and more. When I first came to the internet, I had some bad experiences that have colored the way that I still view fandom. I just have to let them go! You know? Those are not people that I am even remotely around anymore. If I like something and want to create something for it, I should just tell the person, "Hey, I think that's cool." And then ask politely if I can play in that particular sandbox.

But I also have some really creative friends and sometimes I feel as if I don't see everything they do.

Question 1:
Have you ever signed up for a "Share a Creation" type of challenge? Like a Big Bang where a person writes a story and another person creates a work of art for that specific story.

Yes, as an artist I've participated in several of these in the Harry Potter fandom.

Question 2:
In general (and I'm not looking for specifics here), have you ever been disappointed by the experience of such a challenge? Maybe your creation wasn't picked or you created something but didn't get it done in time to share during the open sharing time. Maybe you didn't like the way that the revealing worked.

Yes. People get stupid about stuff. or sometimes it's not organized enough. It's mostly people getting stupid. LOL... aka Drama.

Question 3:
Have you ever been asked if someone could create something new from something you created? For instance, someone made a podfic from one of your stories or asked to write a story based on a piece of art you created?

Yes. I get notes all the time on deviantart asking if someone can use my art on their website for their story. I always say no. Usually it's for a story they've already written and they just happen to think my art fits it. If someone wants to create a story with my art as the inspiration, I would say have at it! I'm flattered!

Question 4:
Have you ever been scared to ask someone if you could create something from something they created originally?
Sometimes if they're really popular. I've drawn for people's stories before without asking. Who doesn't like fanart?? Then I send it to them. Mostly I get "OMG AWESOME!" sometimes I just don't get a reply.

Question 5:
Is there a reason that you don't do the "Share a Creation" challenge? Do you not like creating on a deadline or haven't signed up in time? Do you create for pairings or fandoms that are small and don't have any challenges for them?

I've been too involved in my original works lately... that and I haven't been drawing. I tend to not write for them because I'm too unreliable when it comes to inspiration and motivation for writing... LOL

Question 6:
Do you have any other things to add along the lines of the above questions?

I'm involved in a Harry Potter fandom (specific pairing) that has done quite a few of these Draw/write type of challenges. Not all of them Big Bangs. They have switched things up quite a bit to get a big variety to the challenges and to make things interesting. Let me know if you want some examples. :)

Yes, I've done [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang the last few years and just did [livejournal.com profile] avengers_bang and am signed up to [livejournal.com profile] marvel_bang.

Question 2:
In general (and I'm not looking for specifics here), have you ever been disappointed by the experience of such a challenge? Maybe your creation wasn't picked or you created something but didn't get it done in time to share during the open sharing time. Maybe you didn't like the way that the revealing worked.

I honestly have been VERY lucky where either my stories got picked up pretty much straight away or at least in the first round of claiming. The artists I've been involved with have always been super responsive and kind. It's always a HUGE gamble on both sides because they are signing up for a story they've never read and you're getting an artist you might not have ever seen before. I totally accept that I have been really lucky in that regard.

Question 3:
Have you ever been asked if someone could create something new from something you created? For instance, someone made a podfic from one of your stories or asked to write a story based on a piece of art you created?

I've had podfics, art and remix/additional stories for stuff I've written. I'm always flattered and usually say yes to those. The only things I now say no to are translations and mostly because I've had a few people ask, I've said yes and then never heard from them again and I also don't like something I've written being archived in a way I can't control.

Question 4:
Have you ever been scared to ask someone if you could create something from something they created originally?

Absolutely. I honestly don't think I've ever written something in someone else's verse or had to ask permission for something like that. I've started dabbling in podfics and have had people volunteer their work for me to podfic so that wasn't so scary. I've asked ONCE to podfic something cold and got knocked back so that probably put me off asking.

Question 5:
Is there a reason that you don't do the "Share a Creation" challenge? Do you not like creating on a deadline or haven't signed up in time? Do you create for pairings or fandoms that are small and don't have any challenges for them?

No, I'm pretty happy to do them.

Question 1: Only Big Bangs. We had an 'inspirational' challenge at [livejournal.com profile] peoplespalace this month but it wasn't structured the way a Big Bang or other such challenge is; also a landcomm challenge let us create art and then all the artwork was up for grabs to create fic for it.

Question 2:
I had a bad experience with a Big Bang where the mods went awol often, there weren't clear instructions on when/how to post, and I never did get artwork even though every fic was supposed to.
On the other hand I had a great experience with the recent CW Big Bang where the mod admitted it was their first time running such an event, made regular posts, asked for opinions, answered questions in a timely manner, apologised for any delays, and made sure that every fic got artwork or other accompanying fanwork.

Question 3:
No. But I have a 'transformative work policy' at my journal and my AO3 account giving blanket permission for them to do so.

Question 4:
I've not done it apart from aforesaid inspirational challenge and landcomm challenges. I'd be nervous asking someone if I didn't know them. Within the "Legend of the Seeker" fandom and the "Darkling" sub-set there's a close-knit group and a certain amount of fanon has been established and we'll refer to other authors' fics and OCs on occasion (with permission) which is nice. But that's very different to finding a fic I liked and wanting to do artwork or seeing a great pic and asking permission to write fic for it.

Question 5:
It's partly my fandoms. It's partly that I worry over deadlines. It's partly that I worry about disappointing the person I'm creating for (because it's not a challenge, it's more like a gift). Sometimes it's the rules (strict size/fill requirements, must have beta reader, etc)

Question 6:
Communication and clarity are key. The mod should make things as clear as possible and respond to questions in a timely manner. Apologies and honesty are appreciated when mistakes/delays do happen. Minimising disappointment by making sure everyone gets something made to accompany their fanwork would be ideal (though maybe impossible depending on size) – even if it's just a personalised banner. From my experiences at your [livejournal.com profile] finishnow comm, I think you're well equipped to run an exchange :D
(And if I've not really answered the questions correctly or haven't been clear on anything, I'm happy to ramble more!)
edited, with my apologies, because I got the name of the comm wrong! *facepalm*

Question 1:
Have you ever signed up for a "Share a Creation" type of challenge? Like a Big Bang where a person writes a story and another person creates a work of art for that specific story.

Yes, I did many of those, both as an artist and as a writer. The regular way, and also the "reverse" way.

Question 2:
In general (and I'm not looking for specifics here), have you ever been disappointed by the experience of such a challenge? Maybe your creation wasn't picked or you created something but didn't get it done in time to share during the open sharing time. Maybe you didn't like the way that the revealing worked.

Being picked up late is always stressful, because it's hard for the ego. Also I have had artists or authors going AWOL for almost all of the challenge then do something fast at the last minute, when I think it could have been better. But most of my experiences were truly great, and that is why I still do them.

Question 3:
Have you ever been asked if someone could create something new from something you created? For instance, someone made a podfic from one of your stories or asked to write a story based on a piece of art you created?

Question 4:
Have you ever been scared to ask someone if you could create something from something they created originally?

I never got that specific urge, to be honest, until this week. As I got bitten by art that I failed to pick, and then I thought it was it. But the artist happened to mail me because she saw I had put her art on my claim and was looking for her author, and we started to talk and might work together after all (apart from the rbb). I also a couple of times contacted an author when a story of mine, that I had already finished/started was way too close to what had suddenly been published and I was afraid that they'd think I would have copied their work. that terrifies me. both times the authors were very understanding and one even became a friend, so that is cool.

Question 5:
Is there a reason that you don't do the "Share a Creation" challenge? Do you not like creating on a deadline or haven't signed up in time? Do you create for pairings or fandoms that are small and don't have any challenges for them?

nope, I sign up for those things ALL THE TIME. If I refrain it's usually because I have too much stuff going on at once ;)
