He'd made his choice. Late at night, Snape told himself that she made her decision first, but he'd always known what he wanted so he couldn't blame her for the direction he was going in. Love was not something he'd imagined finding in life, if that was what this devotion could be called. Obsession, maybe. Lust.
Now that he almost had it, he didn't know what to do with it. It was too foreign to make any sense of it. If he could have had one wish, he would have asked for time to stand still. That was their only choice for happiness.
His head knew what his heart couldn't bear to understand - Lily could never be his.
And yet... and yet... the ache of wanting a future with her resounded through him. He didn't know how to turn away from the look in her eyes that told him he could have it if he only... but no. Best not to dwell on her eyes.
Keep my heart, he whispered into the darkness of his memory where she still patiently stood. I won't be able to take it with me now.
