"You want me to do what?" Jayne sat forward, his fists pounding the table with enough force to rattle the plates and mugs. He was angry that he'd been caught lollygagging at the table again, his mind not on the swirl of conversation pushing past him, so that he didn't hear what was happening until Mal had mentioned him by name.

The Captain was plenty calm, his eyes suspiciously blank of every emotion. It felt like a trap. "I would like you to mention something you're thankful about."

"What for?"

"It's just something we used to do when I was growing up," Kaylee stammered, her emotions written all over her reddened cheeks. "You don't have to do it if you don't-"

"No," Mal responded, his hand going up to stop Kaylee before she could go against a direct order from her superior. "I say that he does it. The rest of us have all gone. Now it's his turn."

Jayne cast suspicious glances around the table, wondering what he'd missed out by not listening as attentively as he should. "What did everyone else say?"

"I'm grateful for the aerodynamics that keep us in the air," Wash commented before anyone could prompt him. "And Zoe. Always Zoe."

Zoe's smile was full of warmth as she leaned toward her husband. "You jumped in with that second part much quicker this time. I suppose I should be thankful for my husband since he said such pretty words about me. And ammunition. I'm always thankful for a goodly supply of ammunition."

"Strawberries." Kaylee's reply was muffled but still as full of girlish glee as it had been the first time.

And so the game went around the table again, as it had the first time but with much shortened answers. Shepherd Book was thankful for the wonderful friends he'd made, not only on the ship but on the other planets they'd made stops on. The tiny smile gracing Inara's face lightened her words as she replied that she was thankful for a way to earn money without ending up in prison.

"I'm thankful for lessons learned," Mal replied somewhat tersely.

"Not Serenity?" Jayne asked. He didn't realize how deeply he'd gotten into the conversation until he spoke but he really did want to know why Mal had answered the way he had. Mal merely shrugged, indicating that the next person should go.

"Penicillin." Jayne wasn't sure why Simon was thankful for medicine but it made everyone laugh.

River was next but all she did was stare at Jayne. Her eyes glittered with malice. While he wasn't sure what he had done, it was enough that she was angry. He let his eyes slide over her as if she was part of the chair. "I suppose it's my turn again." He hadn't thought of anything while he'd been concentrating on everyone else so he said the first thing he'd thought of. "Meat. I'm thankful for real meat."

"That wasn't so hard, was it?" Mal growled.

"Hard enough," Jayne mumbled to his plate, wishing he could have answered truthfully. Now that he thought about it, he was really thankful for his mother but that didn't seem a very manly thing to say, especially after the Captain didn't mention his ship. His answer was good enough, he supposed.
