So I opened this up to do an update. Looked at it for a few seconds. Realized that I didn't have a lot to update ABOUT. Not that's interesting, at least.
I'm writing this at work because it's been a REALLY slow Friday so there's not a lot going on. I dutifully did my paperwork this afternoon and there's still some to do but I don't like to get too "caught up" because then you never know what they might have waiting for me next!
At lunch, I got within the last 30 pages of my book (Holder of Lightning by S.L. Farrell) and it was AGONY putting it down again. I cried! There's this part after a battle where the main character is walking through the wounded and those who have lost loved ones. There was just something about the way that it's written that it brought a tear to my eye. I think if I'd been alone (i.e. not in the back room where anyone could walk in on me) I might have actually full out cried. Yes, it was that poignant. Anyway, it's been a good book and I can't wait to get the next one. That doesn't mean that I'll read it, of course. It'll sit on a shelf for awhile.
I have a reason for my madness, of course. Have you ever read a second or third book in a series right away and noticed a change in voice or tone or whatever it is? It's more noticeable when it's right together. The author most likely didn't write it in a small span of time so the voice has changed in the writing. He or she is writing from a different place. Not necessarily better. Just different. Anyway, that's the reason why I don't read the same author in a short span of time. Rereads are different. If I like a book enough to reread (and I have to REALLY like a book to reread it with the books I have waiting to be read a first time... have I listed a number recently for the number of books I own? In the high hundreds, I'm sure) then I like where the series is going and I'm okay with it. Jasper Fforde is one that I can depend on. As is Rachel Caine (the Morganville Vampire series) and Stephen Lawhead (most specifically The Song of Albion series which is probably top of my list in most reread books).
Great. I went to Amazon to make sure I was spelling names correctly and now I've found out that the 5th Mercy Thompson HARDBACk is on sale for $9.99 so of course I have to buy it. And then I have to get to Super Saver shipping (Bastards!) so I have to buy at least two more books. Oh woe is me! My life must suck if the only thing I'm worried about on a Friday afternoon is what book I need next. I'm also getting Embers by Laura Bickle and Friday Night Bites the second in the Chicagoland Vampires by Chloe Neill - both were recommended to me by Amazon and I'm usually very happy with their recs!
Okay, I'm going to end this post before I ended up spending more money. *grins*
But tell me if you've read any good books lately or seen any with appealing covers. I've heard a couple of recs out there recently (and have Rosemary and Rue and the Innkeeper series on my list at Amazon) but keep 'em coming! I won't be happy until I own all the books in the world!
Oh... and I heard a rumor that they might bring back Heroes for another season. I'm not sure how I feel about that. Another ho-hum season may kill it ENTIRELY for me.
