Castle tried to ignore his shaking hands as he pulled out his phone to dial the number to the precinct. He'd had four long hours to consider what he was going to say to Kate once he got her on the line. The problem is, he didn't want her to know he was calling. In fact, he wanted to be there in person but he needed to know her mood. Getting Kate in the wrong mood right now would destroy the rest of his summer. If he was going to botch this up, he might as well get back on the jitney and head back to the beach. He'd already had a horrible sunburn so far but all that pain wouldn't be as bad as the thrashing she would give his heart if she wasn't prepared to see him.
"Detective Ryan, please." He deepened his voice just in case the operator realized it was him and made a fuss. The last thing he wanted to do right now was to make small talk. When he was let through without a fus and Ryan answered, he dropped the act. "Hey, Kevin. It's me. Castle. Don't say anything. Just listen." There was silence on the other end of the phone. "Hello?" Rick finally asked, wondering if the connection had dropped. His phone had been doing that more and more lately. Sooner or later, he was going to be making a call to his cell phone carrier.
"You told me not to say anything."
"Oh. Right. I'm just not used to you listening to me, much less doing what I ask. Is something wrong?"
"Why would you think something's wrong? This is a police station, after all. There's never a time when things are right or haven't you figured that out by now?"
There was definitely something wrong. And not just the normal "police station wrong" that Kevin was implying. Clearing his throat, he continued with his first line of questioning. He'd get the other stuff later. "So, I was wondering if Kate was there. Just trying to gauge her mood before I come by."
"She's not here."
"Not there? Does that mean she's not in the building or she isn't in the room? Or perhaps you're speaking metaphysically and she's physically in room, just not mentally. That doesn't sound like Kate but it's summer. Maybe she's checked out because there's not enough to keep her mind occupied. I'm sure you guys are pretty slow in the summer."
"No. We're not."
He'd obviously hit a nerve. If Kevin would give him more to work with, he might be able to fix this. "You're not?"
"We're not."
"So she's not in the room or not in the building?" There was silence. This was getting old. "Come on, Kevin. Help a guy out, will you?"
"She's. Not. Here."
From the sounds of those words, those were the only three he was going to get on the subject. Fine. He would put these new detective skills to some use and find Kate. New York wasn't that big, after all.
