Monday can still be interesting
Apr. 9th, 2012 09:28 pmMy goal in life is to have an ISBN. Yes, that is my life's goal. It would be cool to be on the shelf in my local B&N (cooler still to be on the shelf of a used book store... if there was one in the area) but all I really care is that I get a book completed and then, of course, printed. As God as my witness, I'll never go hungry again... I mean, I'll eventually have a book that's completed.
I tell you that to tell you this.
Have you ever listened to the Nerdist podcast? You need to. It's funny AND you learn interesting things. Today, I listened to the episode with Scott Sigler. I don't know if you know who he is. I didn't before today.
Go and listen here. The interview will BLOW YOUR FREAKING MIND. This guy entered the book world in a completely opposite way that everyone else has. Well, not so much anymore because of the Amazon Kindle extravaganza. But he spent years trying to get his book published and he kept getting rejection letters telling him that the writing that was good but they weren't sure what shelf they would put it on once they published it. So he turned his books into podcasts and gave it away for free. Then, there was enough interest to have 3500 hardcovers printed. People paid for something they'd already gotten for free.
Because it was a quality product.
What did I take away from this podcast? (1) Create a quality product. Really, you can stop reading the list now. (2) Pay for a real editor. Don't depend on your own eyes or even your beta (cause I'm taking mine along with me on this journey because I don't think I can write without her) but pay good money to get back an even better product. That's something I can get behind because I'm so tired of reading good Kindle books (that I got for free, of course) that could really use a decent editing. (3) There is no tried and true way of getting publishing these days. Publishing has changed over the last few years and is still changing. Be prepared for anything.... see (1).
Dude! The guy is going to try to write ONE MILLION NEW WORDS this year. He's awesome! I really need to start counting up my words.
