I get excited about very little that Tom Cruise does these days. I could care less about his divorce. I'm mildly interesting Ghost Protocol only because I want to see Jeremy Renner's part in it. Right about now, I'm really liking the fact that JR and TC seem to have formed a friendship, if you will, while on the set of that movie.
Why?
Because Tom Cruise has been seen around NAS Fallon Nevada which means that rumors of a second installment of Top Gun are reaching the realms of possibility.
To give you some background on why this makes me all atwitter...
I'm a Navy brat. My dad served on board several air craft carriers before ending up in land locked Fallon, Nevada to fix helicopters. Google it if you aren't familiar with the area. It's a desert! In fact, it's the desert you see in Top Gun. When he's not flying over water, he's flying over Fallon. Well, someone's flying over Fallon. *grins*
Why is NAS (Naval Air Station) Fallon, NV so important? A couple of years ago (well, not a couple but I can't remember exactly when in my past it was so we'll say a couple), Congress decided to start closing down military bases. One of them that they closed down was Miramar. Sound familiar? It was where Top Gun was. Top Gun is no longer there. It's in Fallon.
Why am I excited? Top Gun is a fixture in my household. We can quote whole swaths of the movie to you. We've even been known to celebrate Top Gun Day. We wait until the very end of the movie and cheer when the NAS FALLON NEVADA comes up on the screen. We can tell you the inaccuracies of both the movie and the military jargon/items used. It is a THING at our house. It was filmed in Fallon while we were still living there. I had no idea who Tom Cruise was (none of his movies had really appealed to me before this one... and, go figure, none of them really appealed to me after this one) but there were sightings of him reported all over town. In fact, I was (and still am) more excited about the fact that Tom Skerrit had been reported to be around, too.
But I'm also excited because I'd love to see Jeremy in this movie. Maybe Tom can make that happen, seeing as JR is on his radar now. It should happen. It most definitely should happen. Yes, yes. I know JR is a little old for the role (good god, he's only three years older than me and he's already an old man in Hollywood terms) but he could make it work! He could!
Edit: I may or may not have started a document entitled Avengers Top Gun AU because of this conversation with Sara:
Sara: And will Tom be an instructor?
me: probably
so he would need to bring in some new blood
like his new friend Jeremy Renner
who he mentored while on the set of Ghost Protocol
Sara: I nominate Chris Evans!
me: you realize
you just
blew my
mind
Chris Evans in Navy whites
I
am
dead
Sara: How so?
me: every butt looks good in Navy Whites
you put a good looking, fit guy in a set and BAM!
