Summary: Kate explodes at Clint. There must be something at the heart of this emotion but she's not ready to face it yet.

Kate glanced at her watch. She and Lucky had now been at the park for thirty-seven minutes and there was still no sign of Clint. He said he’d come by right after his meeting with Fury and that had ended, or should have ended twenty-three minutes ago. While she’d heard of meetings with other people going on for hours past the allotted time, it was unprecedented that it should happen with Fury.

It was ridiculous to panic but Kate could feel her chest tightening. Something wasn’t right. He wouldn’t stand her up like this except if something was wrong. Except if he was in trouble.

“Come on, boy. We’re going for a run.” And she meant it. Holding Lucky’s leash as loosely as possible, she set out at a pace she knew she could keep up long enough to get from the park to SHIELD Headquarters. Not any further, even if she’d been working out a lot more lately.

Lucky enjoyed the run for the first few minutes but, when it became clear that this wasn’t for fun, he started to balk at the speed. When he finally stopped, Kate went sprawling on the pavement. Several people weren’t able to change their path and ended up in a knot of limbs on top of her.

When she was finally untangled, a familiar hand reached out to help her up. Clint was grinning like the Cheshire Cat. “Man, I can’t take you anywhere without it ending in some sort of injury.”

“Bastard,” she yelled as she slapped away his hand. “You made me worry. You always make me worry.”

“I’m... sorry?”

“No, you aren’t. You never are.” It was a struggle for her to figure out if she wanted to continue screaming at him from her current position or if she was going to get to her feet and yell at him at from a better vantage point. Instead, she picked a third alternative. Kate jumped to her feet and threw Lucky’s leash at Clint. “Take care of your own damn dog from now on. I’m not your housekeeper or your dog walker.”

“Kate?” The confusion was thick in his voice. “What’s going on? What’s your problem?”

“You.” Instead of letting him get another question in, she turned and began running back the way she came. She didn’t end up at Clint’s apartment but took a right. There was no rhyme or reason for that direction other than it was just the way her feet took her. When her emotions smoothed out, she’d head back and apologize for blowing up at Clint. For now, she wanted to revel in this feeling of betrayal.

I really enjoyed this - very emotional and great descriptive wording. Even though it's a short piece I could really feel Kate's rising frustration and panic, and I like how you used the running to get it across. You also conveyed Clint's surprise / shock / utter confusion beautifully.

I have to admit, though, I totally burst out laughing at the image of Lucky putting on the brakes and Kate doing a faceplant. That was pretty priceless. ^.^

Thank you for sharing! (And I totally realized that our quick fics share the exact same word count, CREEPY)

Also totally wanting to friends you if that's okay / cool / not stalkerish?

Kate doing a face plant was my favorite part of this story! She wasn't happy with me when I wrote it, though.

This is part of a much larger story that I'm working my way through. I've gotten bits of it written, thanks to writerverse and some of the other challenges I've found!

And yes! Please friend! I love new friends! Especially those who like Kate!
