This morning I've been:

*trying not to think about all the sleep I DIDN'T get last night because I can't shut my brain off right now. If I could stay up 24/7 writing, I think I have enough ideas to fill my time.

*reading through the latest issue of TV Guide and loving all the pretty, pretty pictures (Eliza and Tahmoh are so very pretty together in the airbrushy way of TV Guide pics).

*working on the smut I've been putting off. This is just not my strong suit.

*running through those ideas that kept me up last night to see if there's anything I need to document before I lose it.

*researching the realization I had last night. I know where I first heard of Steampunk! CHARLES DE LINT! If you're a fan of my blog, you know I ADORE Charles de Lint. I had forgotten (until I was getting ready for bed last night) that his stuff is considered Steampunk. Especially the stuff he wrote in the anthology Borderland which is a book I wish I owned! I love that book. Got it from the library no less that FIVE TIMES. It's on my Amazon list but I always find other books to purchase. Silly Lar! At the time when I read that book, I had tried to integrate the magic I was writing with a world like Borderland but failed because I didn't understand what lay at the core of the world. I was trying to make it a NORMAL Fantasy world. Even if you call what you're writing a rural fantasty (which is one of the other ways of saying STEAMPUNK), you still need to understand the underlying basis that technology is different in this realm. Magic is different. The people are different. There are ideologies at work here that must be dealt with first. This is going to be a long process but then so was learning to write Harry Potter or any other genre I've ever tried to write. I need to come to terms with the world that is in my head.

...There are no new plots - only new worlds...

Hmm. I would consider de Lint to be modern fantasy or urban fantasy, depending on which of his stories you're reading. Steampunk...I think of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and Airborn by Kenneth Oppel (if you haven't read that, you need to). And possibly Stardust, though I'm not sure.

Then again, I also don't have a wide grounding in steampunk. I have a couple of friends who are into it or getting into it. Want me to do a post on my LJ to find out which of them they are/make an introduction? *G*

Like I said, I verified this! While not all of de Lint is Steampunk, the Borderland stuff he did in Ellen Windling's world is considered Steampunk. That's the stuff I've loved the most of his, too. That whole concept is made of GOODNESS.

But sure! I'd love to friend some people that are into the concept. Especially writer types! *grins* LJ is full of people willing to dress up but I may have to head over to blogspot for the writing aspect of it.

Oh, I wasn't arguing with you, sorry. I'm just surprised. Though I can definitely see how Bordertown would fit into the genre, more than his other stuff. Have you read the rest of the Bordertown books? I LOVED Finder in particular.
