Oooh. So tempting. If I entered would you cajole me into finishing it?

I would! I would! I swear, there are a bunch of people I know who need to have a check-in on Mondays or something, just to get a handle on everything that is in the works!

And the nice thing about this one is the mini bang that you can do instead of the big one. Although 15k isn't too unrealistic!

Yeah, that is nice. *is tempted* We'll see if I can clear out my WIP folder before the 20th.

What is this "clear out" that you speak of? *grins* Isn't it supposed to a be a well-populated place where words go to hibernate FOREVER?

Well really by clear-out I mean cut in half. I have like four stories that just need another scene to write.

Oh, that's not bad. Totally doable in that time frame.

No, it's just the editing and gathering up the courage to post them that takes time. ;)

Oh, man, I so want to do this... But I have a history of signing up for too many things at once!

Maybe if I finish my backlog by the end of January, I can sign up. I already have an idea, damn it. o_o

If you already have an idea, it's almost worth it! I don't have an idea yet so I'm not doing this one. I'm hoping to keep this one on the back burner just in case something strikes me but if I don't, that's okay, too.

I guess it's a good thing to know your limits; promptathons and 1k oriented things are much, much more my style. I don't think I've ever written over 5k for any one story in my life. But I definitely applaud everyone who can do that! :)

I guess better too many good things than none?

I just wish they wouldn't all clump up at the first part of the year. If they spread out more throughout the year... well, I would still end up getting myself into trouble and stressing out Aster with all my stressing and whinging.

My goal this year is to WRITE and not wait for challenges. I mostly just need the big bangs to give me a deadline and a reason. And a word count, I guess.

And I don't think word count is important. What IS important that you finish and you push yourself! I'm all for those two things!

Date: 2013-01-12 04:07 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] sweetwatersong.livejournal.com
That's an excellent goal to have! I tend to write whenever an idea strikes me (and whenever I have the motivation to write it, which is often the limiting factor), and pay absolutely no attention to word count when I do so, so it sounds like we're on flip sides of the coin. It certainly takes all types! :)

I guess I've never considered, at least consciously, pushing myself when I write. Writing has always been a means of escape for me (in both good and bad senses), and anything structured that I've tried to do has absolutely fallen apart. Taken humanity (n) for instance - the one fic I mapped out, the one fic that would be in chapters, the one fic that would be Big with a capital B... and I haven't touched it for weeks, if not months at this point. I do try many different things when I'm writing, but I'm not sure that's the same as pushing myself. How do you approach it?

When I think of "pushing myself", I think of exercising and all those gym teachers that told me that I would like running if I ran more. Supposedly, the more you run, the better you become at running. I can't say if that's true or not because I've never actually run enough to like it. I think it's a rumor and don't care to ever try to find out if it's true.

In my writing, though, I try to do something every year that scares me. One year, it was doing a Big Bang. One year, it was joining an RP. Last year, it was fully immersing myself in fandom again. I don't have to do it more than once if I don't want to. It's completely up to me.

I also try to do "one better" from time to time. If I wrote one story for a promptathon, I'll try to write two for the next one. This sort of depends on RL.

I'm NOT in favor of any sort of structure! None of this is set in stone! I don't do well with structure. The fact that you have MAPPED out a fic is amazing to me! My idea of mapping out a fic is looking two steps ahead... which, I might add, is sort of how I play chess!

Anyway, that's what I do.
