Lavender bent over the cake, shielding her scalding tears as she struggled to get the icing smooth. Another year – another reason to stay in bed. She had enjoyed being fifteen. Things had made sense then. Eighteen had been interesting. Twenty looked to be downright miserable.
Not only had she made her own cake, but she had thrown herself a party for fear that no one else would. Good thing or she would have been sitting alone at a bar full of people who could have cared less about her special day. Maybe that wouldn’t have been so bad after all.
