I'm in Denver for the weekend to attend Denver Comic Con. We decided to get here early today and I'm glad we did! Doors/registration opened at 2 and we got here at 11:00 to a lone we felt was pretty long. When we finally got in the building, we could see the END of the line... that we nearly hit coming in the door! It went around the convention center. We went to a couple of panels (The Weird West and The future of writing), decided to eat and discovered the line was still outside. We went into a crowded Exhibitor Hall for an hour, came out (too crowded) to discover the line to get into that room was RIDICULOUS! I have some awesome pics and will share later.

Nice! I am slightly jealous, but I figure I'll get to a con eventually. Learn any fabulous secrets about the future of writing?

I'll pave the way and we'll have to find a con where a bunch of us cool people can meet up and geek out!

Or, when you're a famous author at a con, I can totally swing by and say hi :)

And I didn't find out anything about writing that I didn't already know! Glut in the market right now. Write anyway. Write what you love and not for a market. Electronic media is getting bigger.

Yeah, my kindle is proof of the glut in the market, and the sad thing is a lot of the glut isn't quality. I haven't read a book that inspired me enough to write even a brief review in the past month. That's a sad though!

It is super sad how little good there is to read in the Kindle market. Of course, I say that having not spent a lot of actual money on the books that I've gotten. There are gems in the free/cheap books but they are few and far between.

It saddens me that there is this glut of bad stuff because it's hard for an author (and this is all assumption) to pull themselves out of the pit! They have to find new and inventive ways of making their stuff stand out. This just seems like a lot of work. I guess what I really need to do is find a panel discussion on how to do this. *grins*

We're planning on going to some good discussions tomorrow on character building. I'm bummed that we can't go to the Alternate History discussion but that's right during the time when we plan on plopping our butts down in the seats for MY GIRL FELICIA DAY. Oh, and Will Wheaton.

But hopefully I'll learn tons more that I can pass along!

Felicia Day!!!

Have you read the Black Swan book by Nassim Nicholas Taleb? It's an economics book, but it has an interesting discussion on how in the new economy, there are certain careers that a set of bizarre outside circumstances have to happen for someone to be famous in books or music or whatnot, because there are still lots of people who want to sing and tell stories, and with modern technology, their work can go beyond their surrounding villages. I'm paraphrasing, but basically all an author can do is produce quality and hope those circumstances happen.
