2. How many characters do you have? Do you prefer males or females?

This is an oddly worded question... how many characters do I have where? I'm going to answer it as if it said How many characters have you created/written about? Do you prefer to create males or females?

The only problem is that I don't know exactly how many characters I've created. Let me see if I can break them down by the stories I remember...

Allen Street/Mark of Sin - approx 12 females and 9 males
Merry Things (First Draft) - approx 10 females and 6 males
Merry Things (Second Draft) - approx 3 females and 7 males
Faerie Hill - 3 females and 2 males
Christmas Angel - 2 females and 8 males
No Evil - approx 15 females (counting some of those secondary characters) and 12 males
(OMG! I just found my old writing journal with all my original stuff in it! For a moment there, I was concerned because I couldn't find as much of my original stuff at my old journal as I had thought would be there and now I can start moving it to someplace that might be more permanent. Whoosh!)
Unnamed House Project - 1 female and 1 male
Books that Kill - approx 4 females and 6 males
Protecting the Family Name - approx 7 females and 4 males

I've missed some. I know I have. There's that partial NaNo but it had a whole family tree of characters that I wrote a little here and there about so I have to count them but I can't find that information anymore so it's going to be lost to my memory.

Okay, back to the topic at hand... I write mostly females. It goes hand in hand with my sister's constant little tidbit she likes to quote to me when I talk about writing - Write What You Know. I know females. The only real male in my life to date has been my dad and I can't say I understand him. After writing numerous male characters in RPG's, I can say I have a better grasp of them but that doesn't mean I understand them.

What has this day taught me? I have a lot of original fiction that needs to be moved to a safer place and tagged MUCH BETTER. Seeing that this post took me AN HOUR AND A HALF and there's not that many words in it, you might see what I'm getting at.

It's also reminded me of how much fun I have creating characters. They're like my children. A couple of years ago, I was talking about a current world I was writing in to a couple of coworkers. There was a new person there as well. She asked how many children I had. The way I was talking about the story, it sounded like I had a whole passel of kids. It made me laugh. Yes, I get passionate about my writing.

How long has it been since I've been that passionate about my writing? Here's hoping I can find that again.

That last bit really hit home with me, because that's exactly how I'm feeling right now. And for me, it's because of a really stupid reason. I've just gotten out of the habit! I don't even read as much as I used to. :(

I love my characters, too, though, just like they were my children; I can totally relate to that!

I go through phases in my writing, most definitely! My year is divided up in original and fandom. I hit my writing stride just in time for NaNo (because my brain is always gearing up for it) and I'm almost exclusively original until about Christmas when I start writing some fandom again. If all goes well, I can glide straight into summer and I never trip up.

But if I get overwhelmed with life, writing gets kicked to the curb early in the year and summer is my "you've got to get this started up again" time.

Lately, I've been running from original! How sad! I don't have the same structure in my life that I did in 2003-2007 so I don't have a lot of people that I can talk to about my originals. That might actually be a good thing but it's just taking me some time getting into the original phase of things! I think that's why I wanted to do this 30 day thing because I knew it would force me to remember how much fun I had with them and maybe that would jumpstart things earlier than November!
