Megan stepped back from the windows, a smile touching lips that hadn’t had much to smile about as of late. She’d just seen something she hadn’t expected with the rain lately.
“First snowfall of the year, girls. Anyone game for a romp before light out?”
Though the night air was chilly, the four girls ran through the common room without coats.
“Hold up there, Smith. Where are you going?”
A sigh escaped as Megan turned around. “Jealous, Zacharias? If you weren’t such a stick in the mud lately, I’d invite you along. As it is, you don’t get to come.”

He watched them silently. There wasn’t enough snow to make but a few paltry snowballs, but they didn’t seem to care. Once, he would have joined in. Nothing would have pleased him more than to have pushed Meg’s smug face into a handful of snow. These days, he couldn’t find the energy for fun.
Her eyes locked onto his. As friends went, she was now his closest. Of anyone, he felt she understood his feelings of loss, but something magical was gone.
“Alright. You can come play,” she shouted.
For a brief moment, he contemplated the idea before walking away.
