I'm so disgruntled right now. Made the mistake of listening to Fox News when my Dad had it on yesterday and there were WOMEN who have this show, called The Five, and they set around and talked about how women who think that they aren't getting paid as much as they feel they should be paid (and that is how they phrased it) should just quit. At first, I was like, Okay. I think I agree with that.
But then I thought about it some more.
And I became angry.
Would they say that to a man? No, of course not. While I don't think that the government should have to step in when it comes to Equal Pay for Equal Work, I do think that companies should be held accountable for not paying women what they are worth in the workplace.
Do I care about this for myself? Sure. Of course I do. But in the grand scheme of things, I mean little in this debate. I support myself (and even that is negligible at the moment since I'm living at my parent's house again) and my dog.
In a world where there are fewer and fewer jobs to be had in America (and I have given a serious thought about moving to India and getting a job in a call center), more and more men are leaving the work place. Some of them are tending families and the women in their family (some are wives, some are significant others, and in some instances, some are daughters) are going back to work. I read this in Time Magazine so take these statistics as you will but EIGHTY PERCENT of women are making TWENTY PERCENT less than their male counterparts - while supporting a family on that one income.
That is not right. This is a world where the state of Wisconsin is repealing the Equal Pay Act (and Michigan is wanting to follow). Check out THIS SITE where there is audio of what Pete Hoekstra, a Republican running for Senate, had to say.
Another reason why I'm angry? I'm a liberal Conservative which, in my parent's house, is nearly as bad as if I was a dyed-in-the-wool Liberal. I've been a feminist for awhile, waffling on just how much I stand behind that "side" on issues. That will be the nail that I pound in my father's grave, don't you know! I'm so tired of being automatically wrong.
I didn't mean to drone on and on about this. I'm sorry. I'm irritated. Work didn't make it better. Neither did coming home to a house where I feel like my "attitude" is always a problem.
Do I need a vacation? Yes. A better job? Oh yes. A job where I can write during the day instead of staring at customers and using my imagination in very unhelpful ways. Yes, please!
I'm thinking I need to get a week off after "the move" (the pharmacy is moving from one side of the building to the other all in one day) to go to Boise and relax and write and maybe try to find a job. Yes, yes. Most definitely.

Pete Hoekstra is a former Republican congressman who is now running for a seat in the US Senate against incumbent Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow. During a campaign event on Friday, Hoekstra made it clear what he thinks about equal pay for women in response to a question asked by a voter attending the event. Hoekstra was asked if he would work to repeal equal pay for women. Here is what he had to say.
“Will, you know, will repealing it be a priority? If you came back and said, you know, that’s really the thing that’s hurting my business the most. My guess is there are other things that we can do that have a higher priority in terms of what I, what I believe might need to be done. I think you know we need to create — that thing is a nuisance. It shouldn’t be the law.”

I hope you get your vacation. I'm sure it would be very refreshing :D
