The Sawtooth Mountains are on fire again. I doubt you've heard much about it because the fire isn't endangering a lot of houses since it's mostly in the mountains. That's very good. What's very bad is that Idaho has been getting less than NO rain this year.

Mom said that the plume of smoke was pretty impressive the first couple of days. This is a current picture of it.

They've been doing some backburning and these are pictures of it. This picture also makes me shiver. If you've ever seen a moutain fire, it's like the fire is eating it's way down the mountainside. When this is all said and done, the burn pattern will be interesting... and scarred into the mountainside for years to come.
...

If you look to the left in this pic, you can see some indication of an older burn. I don't remember this moutainside burning so maybe 15 years ago??? something like that.
...

You get a sense of humor when this is a yearly occurence.
...

The crews hard at work. Keep them in your prayers. Right now it looks like BLM (the government boys) are able to fight this thing on their own. That's very good. When they have to call in the local fire departments, that means things are bad. Dad's crew hasn't even been alerted for this yet. They're having enough trouble of their own but nothing this bad!
....

Mom says they're doing a lot of flame retardant drops... and also water drops. This river isn't nearly as high as it should be and it can't be helpful when trying to fill a bucket - or a plane!
...

This is a map of the fire. The grid over to the right is Ketchum where most of these pictures were taken and where my mom works. As you can tell, most of the fire is up in the mountains and away from "civilization" although there are plenty of people who still live up in the hills. Not to mention all the wildlife.
