Eli never thought twice when he picked up his phone and saw VM come up on caller ID. It was habit now to flip open the phone and say, “Hey, V,” as if she was calling to tell him what she’d had for dinner, as if he cared. But he did care about these phone calls. If nothing else, a Veronica Mars phone call meant something out of the ordinary in his mundane life.
He knows that there will never be anything between the two of them that isn’t professional but that’s okay with him. There was a kiss in their past but it’s better to leave that sort of thing where it is. Besides, he’s fairly certain she’s forgotten about those fifteen seconds of her life. When a girl is finalizing her wedding to someone like Logan Echolls, she doesn’t usually give another thought to other, less financially secure, guys.
But she still calls. Every day or so, she has something for him to do that pulls him away from the monotony of life without a million dollars in the bank. It’s their thing. He says, “Hey, V.” Her voice is always dripping with sarcasm when she says something like, “I do love how you always have time for me.” He always tried to say something equally as scathing but he knew he was never up to her level. Still, he came when she called. It was something.
