Dashiell Hammett is buried in Arlington Cemetery with, essentially, no fanfare or flash. The author of The Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man (among so many others) has a single white stone as the monument of where he was laid to his final rest.

I'm going to need to visit the next time I go. It'll give me a good reason to go again!

Do you remember that I said awhile back that I wanted a real life person to use as Kate Bishop when I write her/visualize her in a medium other than comics? I have found her.

Caroline Dhavernas

Yes, she's not 19 but there are some older pictures that have her looking a little more youthful than others. Yes, she's in Hannibal but I don't watch Hannibal. From her IMDB list, I don't believe I've ever seen her on my TV or movie screen. While others will look at her and have preconceived notions, I won't!

At Clint's apartment (although those red lamps are a bit horrid)
A bit dressed up
Sometimes you have to prove to those around you that you aren't a little girl anymore and that you can handle being a superhero, the same as them
Yeah, I can hit that even in this breeze
(I don't even have anything to say to this one because this is her with Ryan Phillpe and that is more than enough for any one picture to handle)

And now I'll get back to that fic...

Title: If It Turns Out This Is A Hoax...
Fandoms: Arrow (TV)/Stargate Atlantis
Characters: Felicity Smoak (with some nice Diggle interaction at the end), Todd
Word Count: 2635
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Felicity is supposed to meet Dig for drinks. Instead, she meets Todd and saves herself from becoming a Wraith snack by using her wits and her words.

Here at AO3

I know that these two fandoms don't intersect in very many places but I tried to write Todd in such a way that you don't necessarily need to know the SGA fandom well to understand the story. It dawns on me that I perhaps didn't go the other way. Oh well!

Yesterday, the only cosplay pictures I took were because the guys behind us in line were doing the "Hey, ! Can we take a picture?" thing and so the person would stop and pose. I never thought I would do any actual yelling. Instead, I figured I would get in on anyone posing for other people and go along my merry way.

And then, today, the Hawkeyes and Captain Marvel walked by me. For the first time, I did the yelling. They were wonderful and stopped with a pose. Here's the picture I took:

 photo e31c0bcd-4f7d-4a8f-9c4c-6d7e62e25941.jpg

Then they thanked ME for taking their picture. We waved at each other and they walked off.

But then Captain Marvel came back to chat while the others went to use the facilities. Turns out, she made their costumes! How cool! She measured my geekery to see if I could handle the news that she'd gotten a shout out from Kelly Sue DeConnick on Twitter about her costumes. Color me impressed!

But it doesn't end there. These were just today's costumes! Tomorrow, they're coming as Natasha, Winter Soldier and Wasp. She even made him a METAL ARM!!!! How cool!

Anyway, you can follow her on Tumblr!

(I didn't take either of these pictures)

Today was the day that I caught a real life glimpse of Felicia Day.

Even from a distance, she is GORGEOUS. Flawless, I would say.

Now, I decided not to spend on autographs mostly because I didn't want to spend yet more time in line than we already spent. But I really wanted to lift that rule once I saw Felicia Day.

Another gorgeous woman? Clare Kramer.

Time has been kind to Clare but there has still been a lot of time between today's panel and her days as Glory on Buffy. Still, she seems like a really nice human being.

Another hero that I got to see up close... Georges Jeanty! He went to some of the same panels I went to... like he's a normal person or something! I completely forgot to bring one of my Buffy comics to have him sign. Oh well. Tomorrow or Sunday, I'd like to walk up to his table and tell him how much I love his work. We'll see.

I did see some amazing art! I tried to go up to the female artists that I saw and take the time to look at their work and compliment them. I'll have to dig out all the cards I picked up but there was some amazing stuff there!

Carrie Vaughn is listed as being there tomorrow in a few panels so now I feel as if I must find out if she has a table of some sort. I didn't take the time to look at any of the book tables since I was intent on finding "Batman New 52 Number 4 first edition but only if it's under $20" for our UPS guy that geeks out with me when he stops to deliver our boxes. But now I'm going to have to go find books!!! Because I need them! I do!

I'm in Denver for the weekend to attend Denver Comic Con. We decided to get here early today and I'm glad we did! Doors/registration opened at 2 and we got here at 11:00 to a lone we felt was pretty long. When we finally got in the building, we could see the END of the line... that we nearly hit coming in the door! It went around the convention center. We went to a couple of panels (The Weird West and The future of writing), decided to eat and discovered the line was still outside. We went into a crowded Exhibitor Hall for an hour, came out (too crowded) to discover the line to get into that room was RIDICULOUS! I have some awesome pics and will share later.

Okay, SGA friends, I have a connundrum for you. Granted, it's been awhile since I've seen Enemy At the Gate so I'm not completely sure what I remember correctly about that particular show. I went to Todd's wiki to get some info for a story I'm writing and came across this bit under 2009:

Later he contacted Atlantis revealing that, though the process was extremely painful, the Iratus bug had completely cured him of the horrid disease, also reversing the gene therapy causing him to turn back into a normal Wraith. He also told them that he had been defeated by one of his crew, who had gotten his hands on several Zero Point Modules, a vast power source that can strengthen a Hive Ship greatly. He was allowed back to Atlantis, but was held in a cell. The Wraith who had betrayed Todd was on his way to Earth having received the coordinates from a subspace transmission from an alternate reality. Therefore, Todd provided the expedition with two ZPMs so it could fly to Earth and battle the Hive before it attacked. Atlantis landed on Earth after the Hive had been destroyed and Todd was still in custody. (ATL: "Vegas", "Enemy at the Gate")

After putting Todd into stasis to keep him alive without dealing with the ethical issue of whether or not to feed him, he was released after the expedition had returned to Pegasus and were investigating reports of a new Wraith Queen, known as 'Queen Death'. When studying a holographic projection left by Queen Death, Todd appeared to be slightly attracted to her image, but he was recovered by Wraith responding to the message's activation before Sheppard could question him about Queen Death's implied status in Wraith mythology.

I'm confused by that second paragraph... that isn't from Enemy At the Gate, is it? Is that from one of the books? Is someone just messing with the wiki? What am I missing?

That I collect books is a given. If I could live in a room constructed entirely of books, I would be so happy.

It's not just a blind collection, though. In and among my legions of books, I have several collections. I collect different editions of Little Women, the first book I could call my own (it was a gift) and the one that first inspired me to try writing my own stories. So far, I have about six editions, including one bound with Little Men. I'm working on getting all the Trixie Belden books. I have some original editions, some mass production editions from when I was young (and first read them) and some of the new bindings they came out with a few years ago.

But I'm most enamored by my collection of Madeleine Brent books. I started reading these only a few years after the last one came out. In fact, Golden Urchin was one of the first paperbacks I bought with my own money. I've been trying to find decently priced hardback first editions (it's weird to call them "first editions" when they came out in the early 80s) and I thought I had them all. THOUGHT. Today, I went looking to see if there was any audiobooks (sadly, no) which led me back to Amazon where I discovered that there is one of the collection that I don't own! I know that I read Heritage of Shadows because I read through them in the library one summer, but I don't own it. How sad!

Now I have a mission. Find a copy of the book.

And forever, I will try to find another author who can write a Gothic Romance like Madeleine/Peter.

I was Watcher of the Wee One the last few nights so this is the latest I've been up in DAYS! I could have gotten back on my computer after he drifted to sleep (at 9pm) but decided I would be the one up with him at the crack o' dawn so I should be getting as much sleep as he was. Even still, it was difficult not wanting to nap during the day. As much as I will miss him staring at me until I wake up or, in the case of this morning, his tiny little foot hitting me repeatedly in the shoulder, I think I will enjoy sleeping by myself again. I love my nephew but I love giving him back!

Have you seen/heard/read Joss Whedon's commencement address this year at Wesleyan University? So funny! And true! More true than funny, actually.

When one is working toward several goals at once and one stays up late to achieve at least part of them, one should remember to look at the clock AND the calendar in combination so that one does not think that TODAY (Monday) was the 28th which makes tomorrow (Tuesday) the 29th. This makes one have to hyperventilate to think that there is very little time is left to work. But one is now happy again when one realized that today is TUESDAY now and there is still time to finish working on the challenge.

I'm trying to finish up the Table Of Doom for writerverse so I'm going to see how much of this story I can get out with the remaining prompts. I finally read Hawkeye My Life As A Weapon and I have so many Kate Feels!

I've also decided that I don't much like the few icons I've seen of Kate from the comics. Well, I like them but I'm not in love with them. You know? I've decided that I'm not much of an "comic as icon" person and need to have a real person in the picture. This means that I need to find a PB that I like as the character. Hmmm...

Also, I should state right here that I have no idea where everything else in Clint's backstory fits in with this particular comic universe. My comic knowledge is spotty, at best, but I'm taking the bits I like best (like Bobbi Morse) and running with it.

Okay, I've been really bad about continuing this here at my journal but this is why I wasn't meant to lead! I am meant to follow. Granted, a follower who doesn't take instruction but a follower, nonetheless!

Today's inspiration is a picture I've been storing in my resource file for a long time, now. Oh, how I want to write something for this and some of the others that I have there. Instead, I get caught up in my research which leads to another story altogether! But someday...

It's the long Memorial Day weekend in the US. We've already made our annual (if the second year on the same weekend can be called annual) trip to Yellowstone Bear World (otherwise known as Yellowstone Lite) and the nephews were ECSTATIC! You drive through a preserve with bear, wolves, elk and other random animals along the path. If you can't get to Yellowstone or are too young to fully enjoy the park (we're in the second category with the boys right now), it's a pretty cool place.

Say what you will about the wilds of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming but we have pretty amazing animals and vistas. You want to see some of the coolest mountains around? Come to my area of the North American Rockies (specifically, the Sawtooths) and check out some pretty cool mountains. Talk about seeing Plate Tectonics up close!

I've been tasked with overnight care of Nephew The Youngest and our sleep last night was fitful. His because it always is and mine because I was snapped back to awareness every time he moved. I had an audio book playing softly when I first went to bed and either the talking soothed him or it soothed me and kept me from hearing him quite so much so I turned it back on about 3am.

Here's hoping we both get some good sleep tonight! I don't have time for a nap like I did this morning!

shows

It's summer which means that I switch it up from watching current shows on Hulu to established shows on Netflix. Tonight, I started Continuum and I plan on finishing up Nikita (I'm still woefully in the first part of Season 1) and starting Chuck. Since I've been hearing good things about Elementary, I'll see if that doesn't show up on Netflix but I have a feeling that I'm going to need to buy it on Amazon.

I've been contemplating getting back on Twitter. Not the Twitter that I had before but something a bit more useful and entertaining. Not the chore that it was before.

Denver Comic Con is getting closer! In another week, I'll be in Colorado again! Even if it's not huge, it's going to be fun. A geeky good time. And a week off is going to be HEAVENLY! Just think of all the writing that I could potentially get done!
lar_laughs: (Arrow - Helena)
Today, I was going about my business, doing work-type things. You know, just everyday, run of the mill work stuff. All of a sudden, my brain explodes with this phrase:

STATE OF GRACE

And my muse says, rather smugly, "That's what the title of your Avengers angel fic will be called."

Funny how that happens.

I really should work a lot more and see if this doesn't happen all the time. *grins*

Also, I am so happy with the response to my last story. I have to tell you guys that I was really, really worried about it. I'm still nit-picky about the way certain parts came out (but I won't tell you what parts those are unless, well, you work with me and then it sort of all comes out when I'm bored and I tell you, ad nauseum, what I don't like about my stories) but that's water under the bridge because my motto is "You Can't Change What You Post On AO3 After You Post It". Seriously considering getting that on a crest or a tattoo or something.

But I was also scared of writing this because it's probably the closest I've come to putting myself in my stories. I'm that girl in the corner, struggling to look like she understands but she really doesn't and so she goes along with whatever is dragging her downstream and she's too afraid to scream, "STOP for a minute and let me catch my breath and UNDERSTAND." She lets people put labels on her that aren't true and there isn't anyone around to answer her questions because she can't just ask anyone because what if they get offended.

I didn't write any on the second story today because I was tired and this story is going to take a lot out of me. I want it to be as real as this one was. In a way, all three of these story ideas hit me upside the head and said, "WRITE TRUTH" and so I shall.

The internet is an amazing place. I'll never be at a place in my life where I will fit in. Oh, I'll mash my square peg into the round hole of this existence but it will never be an easy fit. It's what I've chosen and so I've only myself to blame. But the internet... man, you can show things here that you never show in real life. Not that I'm a different person but I'm more real on this screen than any other place. It's both scary and exhilarating. I wouldn't have it any other way.
lar_laughs: (Writing - beating my head against the wa)
I did a "This is what I have to do" email for Aster but never really made a list for myself. It's been muddling around in my head, getting me all shivery when I can't remember what I need to be working on (because the answer is always SOMETHING, after all).

This week:
-Finish up TBBT (Missy finally gets some say in her life) story
-Start (START!) the Sherlock (BBC) (Harry has a long talk with her brother) story

After:
-Map out Where Were They story for MarvelBang
-Consider mapping out Felicity and Diggle are awesome moments for DCBang
...rewatch finale to see if there's anything I can mine toward this end
-Start writing [community profile] intoabar story (Felicity from Arrow & Todd from SGA)

Oops! I know there is something else there but now I can't remember what it is!

I've completed my first of three stories for [community profile] queer_fest! Hooray!

Title: Initiation Into This Life (or: 5 times Clint told the truth and one time she didn't)
Fandom: Marvel movie!verse
Pairing/Characters: main: Clint Barton (female), Natasha Romanoff - secondary: Nick Fury, Phil Coulson
Rating: Teen and Up
Word Count: 5202
Prompt: Everyone else thinks Clint is a guy. Clint doesn’t really bother correcting them. for [community profile] queer_fest
Warnings: hints at Clint’s less-than-happy beginnings

Author's Note: I saw this prompt and wanted to write it. I started writing and found myself in a darkness, wondering that I'd ever considered it. I asked [profile] hufflepuffsneak what she thought of the story so far and she liked it. Without the quiet encouragement, I would never have finished this.

Summary: Clint Barton has the Black Widow in the cross-hairs of her bow but stays her impulse as she realizes that this woman has seen things, in this first meeting, that not even the people who know her best have ever realized. I was told you were one thing, yet I see you are completely another.
